So I am back in London, still pretty jet lagged (I think!) and hitting the ground running. My time in NYC was great. Fountainhead Transmedia & I worked on some very cool stuff and my main focus for the next two weeks with them is to see if we can get their Kickstarter campaign to be successful. Truth is I am learning first hand how difficult this can be, even when the project already has a proven track record, is on a popular platform and has a pretty decent fan base. Most of my time has been spent trying to figure out how to get people to connect to the story of the project.

We’ve done everything from having a booth at a bike event in NYC, used social media and even forums and Reddit. Yet, here we are 18 days away from he campaign ending and I am still trying to figure out that magic button to get people excited about the project!

At the same time, I have come back to London and am of course, headlong into the last week in the run up to Kapow! Comic Con. We did the event last year and are back again this year with not one, but THREE projects to showcase! This has meant shooting clips for a new game in the Zombies Ate My City franchise merely 24 plus hours after landing. Needless to say I was exhausted but had a blast working with actor Graham Vick in his garage yesterday!

Ahead of me lies a week of testing, writing, proof reading and receiving deliveries.

And utter exhaustion for all of us I suspect.

Tall Bike Joust

I’ve been quiet recently but that’s simply because I’ve been busy not just on prep for all the new stuff we are launching at Comic Con, but also because I’ve been I’ve been involved with a new transmedia franchise. The very cool folks at Fountainhead Transmedia have got me on board to develop their Tall Bike Joust brand into a bigger transmedia franchise.

Tall Bike Joust is a game for the iPhone which was spun off the cult indie doc B.I.K.E. which explored the subculture of bike gangs and tall bike jousting in NYC.

I’ve been brought on to look into expanding the Tall Bike Joust universe into other mediums such as graphic novels and even a narrative feature.

I’ve also been helping them set up and run their new Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to enhance Tall Bike Joust into a multi-player joust fest on your iPhone. Check it out on: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tbj/tall-bike-joust-iphone-app-upgrade-to-multi-player

It’s an exciting franchise to work on, with the potential for a very exciting world to be created that also has a timely message about individuality, the flaws of capitalism and the spirit of independence.

Back Down The Transmedia Rabbit Hole

I’m back in Bristol and that means more crazy development! Since I’m off to NYC in a week, we’ve had to ramp up all the work we’re doing for Kapow! Comic Con here in London this year. The booth is going to be rammed with a plethora of content and goodies that we’ll be giving away!

Timedancer

It all started with Timedancer and whilst we have had to delay new episode for the series till Q3/Q4 2012, it by no means is stopping us from keeping the universe of Timedancer going. We’ll be premiering a brand new spin off written by a spanking new writer by the name of George Heritage! It’s called Timedancer: Sliders and chronicles a high-octane tale set within the story world!

Zombies Ate My City

We’ve barely just released Zombies Ate My City and we’re already building a non-location specific spin-off which will be premiered at Kapow. Klada will be back with some nefarious scheme and there will also be ZAMC goodies being given out for free at our booth!

Earth.0

After months of working with creator Yen Ooi, Earth.0 will finally be premiered at Comic Con. An epic sci-fi tale that will span the duration of a few years, certain objects will make an appearance at our booth as will a unique interface built for the upcoming Windows 8 tablets! We’ll also have some nifty Earth.0 freebies to give out.

Why Is That There?

So today I am dealing with the challenge of writing for an unusual format. And I’m not talking some twist on TV or a mobile device, but rather a display that is typically not used for storytelling at all. Where one would typically look to text, video or images to tell a story, I am having to think not just about the content but about how that content is to be presented as well.

It’s a fine line. You don’t want to get too bogged down coming up with esoteric ways in which to present information. You want to constantly focus on ‘how does this element of story get told on this medium effectively’.

In the end, it will be about creating a sense of comfort if you ask me. It is important that when the participant experiences that part of the story of said medium, the content feels ‘right at home’ in that format. The participant must never feel jarred by the story being told them in said fashion.
